Five musicians from different parts of the world found a string quintet in Berlin. They have left their respective home countries for a variety of reasons - political or personal, because they wanted to or had to. With the beautiful naturalness of contemporary Europe, they sit side by side as equals - regardless of gender, religion or origin. A concert trip to the Spanish coastal town of Portbou, where they are confronted with the fate of the German philosopher Walter Benjamin, reminds them of the fragility of existence and triggers a narrative: The musicians tell of leaving the familiar, the parental home, the country from which they come. They ask questions about their old and new homeland - about Europe, about Germany, about Berlin. The fictional narratives revolve around the possibility of a world of peaceful coexistence, which seemed to have become such a reality on our European "island" in recent decades that we have almost forgotten how fragile it is.
